What kinds of games can I make using BYOND?

BYOND is best suited for creation of 2D multiplayer online games.

You can make any genre of game! There are RPGs, crafting games, platformers, shooters, puzzles, strategyyou name it, the genre has been made in BYOND!

Design tip: For your BYOND games, plan your game to be fun if just 1 person is playing, so that your game can develop a loyal following of players who enjoy the game and will play it themselves while hosting it for others to join. Also, be sure your game is even more fun when multiple players have joined, with meaningful player interaction!

Some BYOND games are single-player experiences, while other games are for a small group of around 2-4 players, and some games handle up to 20 players, or even more than 100 players on one server at a time!

Can I develop and release games for free using BYOND?

Yes! BYOND’s environment and engine is not only free to download, but also free to publicly release your games!

If you choose to release your game on BYOND’s site, you can release your game for free, or you sell subscriptions to your game.

BYOND’s core developers will receive a fraction (currently 20%) of revenue from sales of your game through BYOND’s site. You can also release your game using Steam, Itch, or other services (as long as you meet their standards).

Is BYOND safe?

If you go to download BYOND and your antivirus software gives a warning, never fear. I have used BYOND since 2002, and it is safe. I have never encountered any security issues with BYOND in all these years using it.
